Ippen was born about 700 years ago in a welthy family resided in modern Shikoku prefecture. He received lessons of Jyo-do from one of dicsiples of Honen, founder of Jyodo-syu, for 12 years. Later he began life of Nen-Butsu, and get strong faith in it. Then he started out to preach Nen-Butsu nationwide. In 16 years, there was almost no region Ippen hadn't visited.
Ippen died in 1289 at Kannon-do in Kobe. There is his cemetery at the plece even now. His biography is recorded in detail in "Ippen Hijiri-e", one of the national tresures.
